Social Adaptation of Adolescents by Means of Art: Theory and Diagnosis

Abstract: The article substantiates the possibilities of social adaptation of teenagers by means of various types of art on the basis of two forms of aesthetic human activity: the perception of art and the creation of an artistic and creative product. Due to the fact that adolescence is a crisis period, the problem of social adaptation is manifested in this age is particularly acute: teenagers are in search for themselves, the meaning of life, and they have an urgent need for self-expression. On the other hand, adolescents have some communication difficulties, they cannot always adapt to the conditions of the social environment in the school, and do not know the means and ways of positive self-expression. Based on the analysis of age-related problems of teenagers' social adaptation, a number of problems have been identified that must be solved by the teacher when working with such adolescents: the problem of self-knowledge, self-affirmation and self-expression. All these problems can be solved by means of art. Art in the process of its perception and creation of an artistic and creative product can help teenagers to express their feelings; it favors the development of communicative abilities. In general, art contributes to the development of emotional and communicative sphere of a person. The perception of works of art teaches teenagers to understand and accept the "Other" person in art and in life, while creation of an art product allows to develop interaction with peers. The most valuable thing is that art helps to expand the social experience of teenagers, and to get acquainted with the values, rules of behavior and communication in different historical periods. These tasks allowed to formulate the components (criteria) of teenagers' social adaptation by means of art - emotionally reflective, analytical and evaluative, and creative-efficient. The indicators of the allocated criteria are determined, diagnostic tasks are developed on the basis of the perception of works of art and the creation of an art product by teenagers.
