Abstract: The article outlines modern approaches to defining the intercultural communicative competence and its main characteristics and discusses the impact of UK-produced global TESOL textbooks on building up this competence among university students. The authors demonstrate that although TESOL textbooks encourage students to adopt an open approach towards cross-cultural contacts, they do not provide sufficient materials to develop students' intercultural communicative competence. Fortunately, there are alternative ways to accomplish this target such as using role plays and project methods to stimulate students' independent exploration of foreign cultures, introducing a specialized course of cross-cultural communication (conducted in the target foreign language), or including more texts on foreign language cultures with a follow-up discussion and comparative analysis in foreign language teaching.
Key words: Intercultural communicative competence; global TESOL textbooks; Teaching English as a Foreign Language; university language training; cross-cultural communication.
