Abstract: The article contains a brief description of the results of the undertaken research of creative abilities of first-year students-mechanics of the Ural Federal University; then it analyzes their correlation with results of test examinations at the end of the semester. Creative abilities are estimated with the help of the following tests: drawing test of Torrance, test of verbal activity, and Bennet's test of mechanical comprehension. The results of the session are determined by marks in such disciplines of the curriculum as mathematics, physics, materials science, descriptive geometry and theoretical mechanics. It is shown that the studied correlation is nonlinear, the coefficients of linear correlation characterizing it are close to zero, but the correlation relations characterizing its nonlinearity (by results of calculations) are rather significant. It is worthy of attention that girls display the discovered influence more evidently than young men. Attempts to explain this phenomenon are made, and prospects for further research are outlined in the article.
