Abstract: The aim of the article is to substantiate the necessity of changes in the system of training social specialists in higher educational institutions of Russia. The modern system does not always uses the forms of education aimed at formation of the necessary competences in order to achieve the desired degree of professional training. This is expressed, first of all, in the fact that a considerable number of the Russian young people do not find employment after receiving education, primarily due to gaps in their professional competence. Yet professionalism helps social specialist to communicate with clients, cope with the documentation and solve other problems. The article contains recommendations for introducing changes in the system of training specialist of social sphere taking into account the changes in the system of higher education of Russia. There exist a number of unsolved problems hampering introduction of innovations and competence approach in education: there is no universally accepted definition of the basic notion of “competence”, and the question about the pedagogical model which includes a number of consecutive didactic conditions and innovative pedagogical technologies is still undecided. The article characterizes four stages of formation of professional suitability: non-suitability (it can be temporary and practically incorrigible), suitability (a person may be a professional but it needs development, self education and professional training), acceptability (there are features of the person’s compliance with the requirements of the trade) and recognition (satisfaction with profession).
