Abstract: The article considers the potential of linguodidactic testing as a means of control of foreign language communicative competence level. The authors pay attention to the core principles for the construction of such tests and to the necessity of following these principles to achieve the most effective implementation of the testing process. The paper points out the existing advantages and disadvantages of linguodidactic testing as a tool for evaluating the complex composition of foreign language communicative competence. Such parts of the regional level of the Russia-wide German language Olympiads for the schoolchildren as writing tour and speaking tour are analyzed thoroughly. In every part: vocabulary, grammar, listening, writing, reading, country and culture study, as well as speaking, the advantages and disadvantages of the suggested tasks are identified. The quality of their structure, content and form are considered along with the results shown by the schoolchildren in test taking. In conclusion the authors express their opinion that the further development of the assessment criteria for the tasks with open-ended questions is necessary. However, the authors conclude that modern linguodidactic testing can be an effective tool for the assessment of the level of foreign language communicative competence. It can, as a consequence, be used as an tool for assessing the education quality, monitoring how precisely and completely the purposes of foreign language teaching are being fulfilled.
