Abstract: The features of functioning of lexical meaning in the minds of native speakers are determined by many factors, including profession of the person. Today there is a tendency of integration of lexical systems of limited functioning, for example terms and their parts, into common lexis. This leads to reconsidering the concept, and to transformation of its meaning in naïve linguistic consciousness. The paper discusses the issues of defining the lexical units in naïve linguistic consciousness, which on the one hand may function as terms in the sphere of physical education and sport, and on the other they are actively used as common words. The research is based on the free associative experiment held among the students of the Ural State Pedagogical University whose future profession is not connected with physical education and sport. The results may be useful for perfection of the content of the subject Physical Education, which assumes teaching the students terms from the theory of Physical Education and Sport and formation of the definitions system of the students.
