Abstract: The paper discusses the issues of establishment, development and the current state of scientific activity at the Department of Geography and Methods of Teaching It, which was established in 2013 on the basis of two Departments: the Department of Physical Geography and the Department of Economic Geography and Methods of Teaching Geography. The paper analyzes the experience of the landscape scientific school, which was founded by V.I. Prokayev, Doctor of Geography, Professor, on the basis of the Department of Physical Geography. The unique scientific and methodological approaches to the issues of landscape study and physical and geographic demarcation are described. These approaches are recognized by the other geographic scientific schools of Russia. One of the scientific fields is landscape phenology (V.A. Basmanov and his disciples). The scientific school of the Department of Economic Geography and Methods of Teaching Geography, established by Professor A.M. Moshkin and Professor E.L. Shuvalov, is discussed. This scientific school deals with the issues of territorial structure of production and population settlement in the middle Urals. Since the end of 1980-s a new scientific field is being developed, called “The Study of Territorial Structure of Geo-cultural Space of the Urals”. The paper provides some information about the current trends of scientific researches in the department, which follow the traditions of the above-mentioned scientific schools. The role of these scientific schools in perfection and development of geographic education is disclosed. The paper analyzes the possibilities of scientific geographic experience in the development of Geography as a science, in socialization of young people and in the development of cognitive interests of students in the sphere of geo-cultural space of Sverdlovsk Region and the Urals.
