Teaching Non-Russian Speaking Students to Use Russian Prepositions

Abstract: The article is devoted to the problem of teaching students to use Russian prepositions in non-Russian school. It reveals the role of prepositions of the Russian language in constructing statements, presents the data from the National corpus of the Russian language, indicates the need of attention of foreign language students to these function words, which don’t exist in their native language. Analysis of modern psychological and pedagogical literature allows the author to reveal the main directions of work in formation of skills of foreign students to correctly build prepositional word combinations and to improve their communicative skills in the Russian language. The study substantiates the necessity of the work of the teacher to improve the students’ awareness of the role (functions) of prepositions in language, acquaintance with the basic prepositions in expressing their values, the distinction of prepositions and other homonymous parts of speech, assimilation of stylistic hints of the use of these function words. The article provides examples of the polysemantic use of prepositions, their semantic and stylistic nuances in speech, some possible mistakes in the speech of the pupils. The results of the study could help in building a system of teaching prepositions of the Russian language in a foreign language classroom taking into account the students’ native language systemic-functional and communicative-activity basis.
