Abstract: The article is devoted to the search and further analysis of the methodological basis for the conceptualization of social surfing of young people in the context of the existing youth studies. Since the "youth question" in science was raised in the early twentieth century, this work is affected by both, the basic concepts of classic researches, and the most modern youth methodology. In correlation with the idea of social surfing we discuss: the communicative approach; social-ecological approach; the theory of scenes; the idea of functionality of youth as a transformative agent; studies of youth in the transitional society; theory of transgressive youth. The research revealed an important foundation for conceptualizing: the interpretation of youth activities through understanding their social and communicative nature by focusing on the communication that takes place voluntarily and is not a result of deviations or coercion. Besides we made conclusions of discontinuity of the youth communities, flexibility of coupling with other individuals inside them, as well as a systematic description of contemporary social conditions. The "youth" methodologies are important, but do not exhaust fully the need for social-philosophical justification for the social surfing phenomenon.
Key words: Social surfing; youth; scene; transitive society; transgression; methodological basis; youth research.
