Abstract: The topic of the article is the organization of independent work of foreign students in the framework of Russian as a foreign language. The scope of research covers students' independent work. The aim of the work is to define the notion of "independent work"; to reveal the characteristics of the organization of independent work of students; to identify distinctive features of individual work as a form of learning; and to reveal the need to use this form of activity in the course of Russian as a foreign language. The authors used the following methods: comparison and generalization. The following results were achieved: the authors conducted a comparative analysis of the definition of "independent work" by Russian and foreign researchers; disclosed a prerequisite for successful implementation of independent work; designated tasks and requirements for the organization of independent work; highlighted the levels of independent work; analyzed the shortcomings in the organization of independent work in Russian education institutions; substantiated the necessity to use independent work at foreign language lessons; and presented methods through which it is possible to successfully organize independent work of students in Russian as a foreign language. The results obtained may be used in practical teaching of Russian as a foreign language.
