Abstract: The phenomenon of patriotism, in spite of its urgency, has not been studied well enough from the cultural-pedagogical point of view. The traditional notion of “patriotism” does not fully reflect the features of the modern information civilization because the concept of “motherland” is broader meaning than a birthplace or a place of residence and relies on the idea of unity of the Russian nation. The ideas of liberalism, globalism and extremism are negative factors for the formation of patriotism in Russia. These trends have developed a system of hostile attacks, when any fact of life in Russia is highlighted and commented on to the detriment of the foundations of state power in Russia. At present, the problem of finding a common idea for patriotic education in the Russian society is not an easy task to solve. We believe that this uniting principle should comprise the following: the traditional values of patriotism of the Russians, intercultural competence, freedom, personal, social and state security, the right of choice and tolerance. The unity of these values may become the basis of a new type of patriotism. And the formation of patriotism in young people must be built on the idea of protecting national, public and personal interests. Analyzing the general approach to the formation of patriotism, the authors define their vision of education based on indirect properties: on the content of judgments of young people about socio-political and patriotic issues; on the dynamics of voluntary participation of young people in patriotic activities; on youth participation in social organizations, in volunteer movement; and on the predominant type of self-identification. The involvement of youth in active socially meaningful activities increases the level of education of patriotism.
Key words: Patriotism, education, birthplace, Russia, youth, traditional values.
