Abstract: This article focuses on talks on literature, which is one of the pedagogical phenomena of Russian pre-revolutionary schools. The main goal of this work is to consider the process of development of the conversations about books as one of the extracurricular forms of guidance of independent reading of students in the second half of the XIX – early XX century, and to identify the main trends of this process. This point of view will be of interest not only to specialists in the field of history of methods of teaching literature, but researchers of child reading. The author described the methodology of the organization of these extracurricular classes. He showed how their purpose and content changed with time. Sources of this research were historical feature articles of Russian gymnasiums (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan school districts), normative documents (curricula, programs, policies, guidance) of the Ministry of national education and of these school districts, works of the past researchers, devoted to this issue. The author identified the main trends in the development of talks on literature in the selected period based on the study of these materials.
