Abstract: The article discusses the urgency and importance of independent work of students as an element of educational process in the system of training competitive specialists able to make decisions on their own. The role of independent work in the system of implementation of the Federal State Educational Standards of the third generation is described. The concepts «independent work» and «independence» are studied. The goals and tasks of independent work of students are revealed as well as the factors that influence its effectiveness. The author analyses the question of successful independent work at the university, which depends on management of this work and includes stimulation of motivation and professional attitude of a specialist, introduction of independent work in the process of studying academic subjects and integration of independent work with the experience of the use of modern pedagogical technologies and the choice of the forms of evaluation of independent work results. The role of independent work organization as a system of different levels is shown: academic and methodical management, institutes/faculties, lecturers and students. The necessity of creation of conditions for independent work of every student including the forms and methods of active and interactive education is proved.
