Abstract: The article describes the need for and the importance of purposeful patriotic education, preserving the "historical memory" of our people. Despite numerous discussions in the scientific community, the authors understand the "historical memory" as a kind of phenomenon of social consciousness, the totality of perceptions of the past events significant for the majority of the representatives of the community. One of such events is the Great Patriotic War, the memory of which unites contemporary Russian society and acts as an essential element of the national identity of our people. It should be noted that one of the trends of recent years, due to technological advances, is "virtualization of history and historical memory": in the age of information technology and unlimited streams of information retransmission of memory media reached a new level, which resulted in the creation of a huge number of web sites. One of these on-line projects is the "Living History", which is designed to preserve the "historical memory" of modern youth. This all-Russia project, using the latest information technology, allows to involve representatives of different age groups of the population, covers the entire vast territory of our country, combines social and administrative structures, educational institutions and ensures the continuity of generations.
