Abstract: The article describes the principles of implementation and the potential of language trainings at school and university. The subject of this research is formation and development of word building component of a person’s language competence, which presupposes discussion of some important aspects of derivational process. The problem of the use of theoretical linguistic knowledge on practice is paid special attention. It is argued that the plan of the word building training and the succession of tasks is determined by a number of factors, which increase the efficiency of comprehension of a word. Such factors include the mechanisms, ways, typical algorythms of word building, idiomatic nature of word building innovations, the accent on semantics of the word with regard to its motivational form and meaning, the ability for variable nomination. The technologies of language game, introduced in the article, may be the basis for new technologies and methods of teaching word building with regard to psycholinguistic factors of comprehension and processing of information. The most productive technologies are: psycholinguistic methods of defining a derivative (including occasional derivatives and those used for the game purposes), the method of building a word according to the given periphrasis and development of potential derivational nests of the given word.
