Abstract: This study is devoted to the experience of planning a course on CAT-systems for future linguists based on the material of English-Russian specialized translation. The educational process was carried out involving 3-year students of the Department of Foreign Languages and Translation of Ural Federal University in the course of “New Information Technologies in Linguistics”. The questionnaire method was used to determine the level of knowledge of information technologies in linguistics. The main goal of this course is to show future specialists the possibilities of electronic translation tools in order to facilitate the search for the necessary information resources in a specific working situation. In this context we speak about a computer-assisted translation system. We consider the possibility of creating personal translation memory files from materials of a certain topic and a thematic glossary in SmartCAT in order to use it in future professional activities. CAT-systems can be advantegeous in increasing work efficiency, controlling the unity of terminology during translation process, using machine translation and electronic dictionaries. However, such systems will be more effective if a translator already has the translation memory file. The article provides students’ feedback on a SmartCAT group project. They highlight the convenience, the ability to work via various electronic devices, a clear role separation, and the collective responsibility for the project. Conclusions are made about the importance of constant practical work in CAT-systems, as well as the instructional role of the teacher in the educational process.
