Abstract: The urgency of this research is proved by the absence of serious studies of trilingualism in the modern world, although the former USSR republics pay special attention to development of the state language, strengthening of international relations and initiation of transnational contacts. Today the language policy in Kazakhstan is reflected in the project “Trinity of Languages”, the aim of which is to teach the Kazakhs three languages: Kazakh, Russian and English. The idea of such trinity is prescribed by contemporary life. The knowledge of English is required for business communication and gives an opportunity to start business in any country of the world; it is a window to the global world full of information and innovations. Such trinity of languages is an important constituent for social harmony in multinational Kazakhstan. To study language reality of the region, the students, members of the scientific research group, made a sociological survey in Kostanay Region in Kazakhstan. The results of the survey revealed that the older generation do not speak three languages, as English is not important for them as it is not connected with anything they expect in the nearest future. People aged 30-45, whose work implies communication, are positive about the phenomenon of trilingualism. The younger generation do not speak the state language (Kazakh), but they speak Russian and English fluently, and they realize the importance of the English language.
Key words: Language policy; bilingualism; trilingualism; national language; sociolinguistics; sociological survey.
