The Model of Developing Intercultural Competence of Medical Students

Abstract: The development of intercultural competence during university studies is a necessary component in healthcare specialist’s training. Thus, there is a need to create the model of intercultural competence development in medical students. The component analysis of the existing model of intercultural competence was performed to determine an adequate structure of the model for medical students. We also provided the definition of the intercultural competence. The intercultural competence of a healthcare specialist is their ability and readiness to communicate with a patient providing qualitative, equal medical care to representatives of diverse cultures taking into account their traditions, behavior; national, ethnic, religious, psychological peculiarities showing respect to values, social status and personal characteristics to achieve positive treatment outcomes. We developed the model of intercultural competence of a healthcare specialist including intercultural knowledge, abilities and skills; personality traits, behavioral models or activities; motives, values, moral judgments necessary for intercultural communication. All the mentioned above components do not act separately; their development occurs during training at medical school, postgraduate studies combined with the improvement of other cultural and professional competencies. The model was developed according to characteristics of professional activity of a healthcare specialist.
